Flavonol-Rich Diet May Reduce the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

Flavonols from sources such as onions, apples, and berries may reduce the risk of developing pancreatic cancer by as much as 25 percent, according to a recent study.

The results, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, indicate that the benefits may be even more pronounced amongst smokers, with a reduction of over 59 percent among study participants.

“This study provides evidence for a preventative effect of flavonols on pancreatic cancer, particularly for current smokers,” wrote lead author Ute Nothlings from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke.

The reason for the apparent added benefits for smokers was presumed to be due to the fact that smokers are at an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

Interest in flavonols is growing rapidly and a mounting body of science, including epidemiological, laboratory-based, and randomized clinical trials, continues to report the cancer-fighting potential of a number of different flavonoids, such as isoflavones, anthocyanidins, and flavonols.
