USDA to Revise Nutrition Program for Women and Children
The US government has proposed that its Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutritional program should be revised for the first time in over 25 years in order to better reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The proposed changes would add fruit, vegetables, and whole grains to the WIC packages for the first time, said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in a notice on Monday.
"Over the past decade, knowledge of nutrient requirements has increased substantially, resulting in a set of new dietary reference values called the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). The DRIs replace the 1989 Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) as nutrient reference values for the United States population. Based on the DRIs, many of the recommendations for nutrient intakes for individuals have changed substantially since the WIC food packages were originally formulated," said the USDA.
The current proposed rule would implement the first comprehensive revisions to the WIC food packages since 1980. It is based on recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which independently reviewed the food packages on request from the USDA's Food and Nutrition service in September 2003.

Week's Conference Call
Conference Calls Schedule
Last week's Conference Call featured Paula Bickle who discussed the benefits of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta carotene, that work to protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation caused by free radicals in the body.
With the rising popularity of supplementation within the diet, it has been recognized that antioxidants are essential for healthful lives. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant which is both water and lipid soluble. There is evidence that CoQ10 helps support healthy brain function. CoQ10 is found in SupraLife Network's Cell Shield® which is also rich in other antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E and selenium. Vitamin A plays an important role in promoting healthy vision, healthy bone growth, and a healthy immune system. Youngevity's Vitalé™ also contains vitamin A as well as vitamin C along with fruits such as blueberry, pomegranate and grape seed, which are rich in antioxidants! Look for the orange antioxidant symbol in the Youngevity Global Catalog to learn more about products that are antioxidant-rich.
Tonight's call will feature Alexandria Brighton who will share exciting details about Ancient Legacy's latest addition to their ever-popular essential oil kits. "The Children's Blending Kit" is specifically designed for parents who want to create essential oil blends just for their children! Don't miss this opportunity to learn about Ancient Legacy's latest kit.
